People often get confused while measuring a physical property (like, length, height, diameter, pitch, etc.) of a workpiece by metric Vernier caliper. They can’t measure accurately something as small as 0.01 cm or smaller because the decoding of the metric Vernier caliper is a little confusing.
This article discusses reading of the metric Vernier caliper.
VERNIER CALIPER:- it is a precision instrument used for measuring heights, diameters and depths. It can be used for measuring external and internal dimension. It consist of a beam, carrying the main scale, inside and outside measuring jaws, a depth gauge bar and an adjustable Vernier head which can be moved along the beam. Fine adjustment is done with the help of a screw. Both the heads are provided with locking screw to lock them at any desired position. The dimension is measured by the main scale reading and by the Vernier scale division.the labeled diagram of vernier caliper are given below.
The step by step procedure for identifying the dimension of an object with the help of Vernier caliper is given below :
Read the value of the main (stationary) bar scale which is just to the left and above the ‘0’ zero reading on the Vernier (moveable) scale. Values will be in mm.
Then consider the value on the Vernier (moveable) scale which exactly coincides with a line on the main (stationary) bar scale and multiply by least count of vernier caliper. Least count values will be in 0.1 or 0.15 mm.Details are shown in diagram how to calculate them.
EXAMPLE :- Take a circular object & measure a external diameter.then it observe that value on main bar scale show 12 mm and value from vernier scale which exactly coincides with a line on the main bar scale is 3 mm.
so, dimension formula=Main scale reading + least count X Vernier scale reading, (where LEAST COUNT is the minimum reading that an instrument can measure.). least count is consider as 0.1 or 0.15
Dimension formula = 12 + 0.1 x 3
total = 12.3 mm , so the diameter of the circular object is 12.3 mm
Now question raised up that how to calculate the least count of metric Vernier caliper. Details are described in next blog.
